What Is A Luer Lock Connector?
A luer lock connector is a plastic component for iv set. It commonly has three types-male luer lock connector, female luer lock connector and rotating luer lock connector. In actual use, the female luer and male luer are typically used together as a set. The rotating luer lock connector can be regarded as an upgraded male luer lock connector. Due to its superior sealing and stability design, luer lock fittings are more widely used than luer slip fittings.
Types Of Luer Lock Connectors
Male luer lock connector: The male luer lock connector is usually made of high transparent PC. It has housing with internal thread and it comes with a female protective cap if needed. The male luer connector is available with winged or wingless.
Female luer lock connector: The female luer lock connector is also made of PP. Contrary to male luer connector, it has external thread and it comes with a female protective cap if needed.
Rotating luer lock connector: The rotating luer lock connector has a separate rotating housing with internal thread that allows the tubing to rotate independently without loosening the connection.
Use Of Luer Lock Connectors
When using Luer lock connectors, medical users typically insert the male Luer connector into the female Luer connector and then rotate one of the fittings to make the two fittings tightly connected. When detachment is required, simply rotate these two parts; the fittings will not be damaged.
When using a rotating luer connector, simply insert the female luer into the rotating luer and then rotate the outer housing to lock it in place. The unique structure of the rotating luer effectively prevents iv tubing rotation from affecting the connection, ensuring a consistently secure seal.
Luer Lock Connector vs Luer Slip Connector
The luer slip connector was designed in the early 20th century. Unlike the luer lock connector, which connects by tightening threads, it connects via its own 6% taper.
In actual use, the luer slip connector is more convenient and easy to operate-just push and pull to connect, but it’s difficult to ensure the stability of connection. The luer lock connector, on the other hand, offers tighter connection and better sealing. In the figure, 1 is the Luer Slip connector and 2 is the Luer Lock connector.
Advantages Of Luer Lock Connector
Firm and stable connection
Ensure that the needle or catheter connected to the iv tubing remains in place and does not come loose during the infusion or treatment process.
Good sealing performance
The threaded locking connection ensures excellent sealing, effectively preventing drug leakage and helping to reduce the risk of infection in applications such as hemodialysis.
Good pressure resistance
During drug injection or infusion, if there is pressure inside the tubing, luer lock connectors provide a more secure connection than Luer sliding fittings.
