What is an infusion set?
An infusion set is a medical device used for administering medications and nutrients into the patients’ blood vessel. It typically consists of iv tubing, plastic spike, drip chamber, flow regulator and needle. Infusion sets are widely used in hospitals, clinics, and other places where intravenous infusion is required. It also comes in various types suitable for different applications, such as precision infusion sets, light-proof infusion sets, and micro-flow infusion sets.

Components of an infusion set
Plastic spike
It usually comes with a protective cap and is used to puncture the iv bottle or bag to allow the fluid to flow smoothly.
Drip chamber
A drip chamber has a drip core and a solution filter inside. The drip core is responsible for forming uniform drops, making it convenient for medical users monitor the flow rate. The solution filter is designed to intercept insoluble particles (like rubber residue and plastic particles) to ensure the safe infusion.
Flow regulator
There are many options for infusion set flow regulators-slide clamp, robert clamp and roller clamp. The flow regulator is a plastic component in an infusion set that allows medical users to manually adjust the flow rate to suit different types of medications and patient ages.
Rubber bulb
Rubber bulb is usually made of latex rubber or latex free rubber. It is a most commonly used injection site in infusion sets to add the extra medications during the infusion.
Needle
The hypodermic needle is used for quick puncture the veins and safe infusion drugs. It comes in various sizes for different groups of people.

Types of infusion sets
Normal infusion set
A normal infusion set has standard components (plastic spike, drip chamber, flow regulator, injection site, needle) and suitable for most daily infusion requirements.
Advantages: Simple to operate, cost-effective.
Precision filtration infusion set
Compared to conventional infusion set, precision filtration infusion set has a additional iv high precision filter, used to filter out the vast majority of bacteria and insoluble particles.
Advantages: It makes the drug safer for vulnerable patient groups such as the elderly and children.
Light-proof infusion set
It’s designed for light-sensitive drugs and is generally brown in color.
Advantages: To prevent the drug from decomposing due to exposure to light.
Micro-flow infusion set
Used for the precise infusion of certain high-concentration or hazardous drugs (Such as anesthetic drugs or emergency drugs).
Advantages: It can precisely control the infusion flow rate, ensuring the patient’s safety during the infusion process.
Use of infusion sets
Medical disposable infusion sets are generally sterilized by EO (Ethylene Oxide) and packaged in PE bags or paper-plastic pouches. Medical users must check that the infusion set is sterile before use to ensure infusion safety.
Medical users should select correct type of infusion set to suit patients’ condition and age. During intravenous infusion, the flow rate and the patient’s response to the medication should be monitored frequently.
After the infusion is completed, medical users should properly dispose of the infusion set to prevent environmental pollution.
